Jackson Berry January 27th 2023 English 1 Honors: Set 8 Mrs. Flynn “One lie has the power to tarnish a thousand truths.”- Al David. Or sometimes a lifetime. Amir knows that too well. In The Kite Runner, Khaled Hosseini shares a story about a boy seeking redemption for himself and his father. A main event in this story is when the protagonist, Amir, learns that his father hid that Hassan, his servant, was his brother. However, Amir and Hassan deserve to know the truth. If Baba told Amir and Hassan that they were brothers, it would have done more good than bad for his children and himself. Both children would have been better off if Baba was honest. In his childhood, Amir spent his time competing for his father's affection. As a child who did not meet the ultra-masculine standards of his father, he was in a constant struggle with Hassan who is strong and athletic and patient and caring. When Baba finds out that Ali and Hassan are leaving, “the color drain[s] from his face.” (Hosseini, 106) Baba pleads “ Please don’t do this.” (Hosseini, 106) As Amir watches on he observes Baba do something he’s never seen him do before: cry. “He cried. … “Please,” Baba was saying, but Ali had already turned to the door, Hassan trailing him. I’ll never forget the way Baba said that, the pain in his plea, the fear.” (Hosseini, 107) Baba had to experience the pain of watching his son, and someone he considers to be a “brother,” Ali, leave.
