Thomas awakens at the sight of a metal door with no memory of who he is or his past. As the doors open overhead, he is constipated with the sight of a type of farm full of teenage boys surrounded by walls known as the Glade. Beyond the Glade is the Maze, a place where the walls are sealed with ivy and populated with monsters
The creatures behind the walls of the Glade are known as Grievers and if they sting you, you will go through the Changing which people receive memories of their past before they arrived at the Maze. Thomas is introduced to the leader Alby, second leader Newt, his friend Chuck and his nemesis, known as Gally. She gives a message that everything is going to change and traumatizes into a coma. This led to the leaders of the Glade suspecting Thomas about the problems they are having. Thomas feels a connection with the girl as if he has known her for a long time.
Thomas is determined to become a runner, but he still has a lot of learning to do before he gets to be a runner. Suddenly, a boy named Ben attacks Thomas suspecting he has seen him during the Changing. Alby soon arrives at the incident and banishes Ben for attempting murder. The next day Minho observed a Griever dead and soon Alby and Minho went out and as dusk approached and the walls were about to close, Thomas sees Minho carrying Alby after being stung by a Griever and Thomas decides to save them and he runs out of the Maze breaking a very important rule in the Glade.
Thomas, Alby and Minho are now trapped in a maze. The Maze is very dangerous at night because Grievers approaches the Maze and are active. Meanwhile Minho runs away despite being the most experienced while Thomas is left with Alby. Thomas determined to save Alby manages to escape the Grievers with Minho and survives the night. This was the first time anybody has managed to survive in the Maze, while others think Thomas was heroic many thought that he had broken the rules and deserved to be capitalized by staying in the Slammer, a prison in the
