Short Film, Big message (Analysis of “The lady and the Reaper”)
Directed by Javier Recio Gracia and released in 2009, “The Lady and the Reaper” tells a short story of an old woman’s desire to be with her husband, an egotistical doctor, and a sympathetic reaper. The film uses humor to depict the ongoing matter of an individual's choice of life or death in certain situations. With the old woman’s husband dead, the reaper understands her wish to die so she can be with him. But throughout the short film the arrogant doctor “fights with death” so the old woman can live that is his job, not keeping in mind the woman’s aspiration to be with her husband.
When viewing the short film, “The Lady and the Reaper” most notice the doctor to be portrayed as an egotistical character. He seems conceited in the way that he has multiple awards and magazine articles for his accomplishments posted on the walls of his medical room. Doofenshmirtz and Perry the platypus from the animated series, “Phineas and Ferb”. This is because both sets of characters are nemesis's and have “beef” with each other, yet they have a strange connection where they somehow get along. Because the reaper has the old woman’s best interests in mind and the doctor only has his career and reputation in mind they get into a fight about what is going to happen to the old woman. However the fight turns out to be more of a playful fight between the two characters, for example there is a “romantic” scene where the reaper falls into the doctor’s arms and they act as if they are going to kiss, sparking the audience's imagination of their odd relationship. Even though the reaper may choose to give up the fight over the old woman’s life in the end it seems clear that both characters enjoyed the “chase” because they had fun while doing
