Natasha Preston took a non-traditional way to become a writer and turned it into developing bestselling thriller books. Preston was born in a small town in England and enjoyed reading thriller books which is one of the things that inspired her to write thriller books. In her book The Lake, Her character Esme and her best friend Kayla return to the same camp as junior counselors that they went to when they were 10, however in previous years they did something that they thought was long in the past but is actually going to come back to haunt them. Through her character Esme in The Lake, Natasha Preston shows that the past plays a vital part in the future. Esme and Kayla finally catch the person that wants to punish them for their mistake. The person is Lillian and roots herself in revenge and is determined to get it. She accomplishes this at the end of the book when she finally gets them back. “‘Police! Freeze!’ My heart stills. I look up and see Lillian smiling from between the trees. She turns and silently disappears into the forest. Then, with wide eyes, I turn to find five gun barrels pointing at me. Kayla, Rebekah, Olly, and Jake are dead, Lillian is gone… and I’m holding the gun.” (Preston 356). Lillian finally wins her battle for revenge and gets everyone back for the burning down of the cabin 10 years ago in the most horrific way. Lillian kills all of Esme’s friends she made at the camp and most importantly Kayla, her best friend, and frames Esme for all of it. Nobody will ever be able to prove Esme’s innocence because everyone she trusted is dead or hundreds of miles away back in her hometown. When she was in her teen years, she was very interested in thriller books but often found that the ones recommended did not keep her hooked. She would go to the library and pick out books but none of them seemed appealing to her. The same concept every time with no real variation. She wanted a book that kept her on the edge of her seat till she was done reading it. So one day she stumbled upon Wattpad, and she downloaded it and started reading. She was hooked immediately. Many of the stories were just written by normal people who wanted to share their writing. Through the website created by her and her family, it was said that “I was searching the 'app store' and came across Wattpad - an amateur writing site. For the first few months I just read, but then I decided to type out some of the ideas swirling around in my head.” (Preston Ink). She started to write the ideas she had with no intentions of it becoming a career. However, as she wrote more and more she developed stories that were actually quality pieces of work. She came to the realization that she actually had a major passion for writing. Her different journey to becoming a writer allowed her to feel free when she was writing and know that she was just doing it for herself and nobody else.
