The land of opportunity? America is known as the land of opportunities. For many years, the American Dream is pursued by a variety of people trying to succeed – not only pursuing the so-called “Hollywood dreams”, but also aspirations of making it big in your career, building a financial stable future or just basic reminiscing and reflecting over your futuristic ambitions. The American dream is not only dreamt by Americans, but also Europeans, Asians and Australians alongside many other sections of the population. That is how big it is. More than 45 million Americans are currently living in poverty – that may seem like much, but compared to what it has been previously, it is actually an active reduction. Without food stamps, one of the welfare programs, it is estimated that 8 million more Americans citizens would be affected by poverty. Hearing from the media almost constantly that the poverty rate has been reduced in America, and that the American citizens have gotten better conditions, I was once again looking forward to experiencing it in real life. Much to my annoyance, I was once again disappointed. The media always seems to promise the moon, but when you see it in real life, it is nothing like they have promised. Walking up and down the street, both in Madison and Chicago, there were a lot of homeless people to be seen. It was especially bad in Chicago. Since Chicago is a bit bigger than Madison, that would and should be no surprise. But what stun me was how bad it actually was. You could not walk a whole street without seeing at least one homeless at the corner of the street, and if the opportunity was there, you could see one at each corner of the
