'The Last Breathe' By Josef Israel: Art Analysis

The piece of art that I have chosen is “ The last breathe” by Josef Israel. The pictures takes place in a room. The appearance of the room leads me to assume that the family is living in poverty. They are all dressed in rags and they are all barefooted except for one. The In the far right of the picture there is a woman sitting in what appears to be a stool. Farther to the left of her in a window that is letting in a fair amount of light, allowing us to see the fine details of the picture. As she is sitting there with two younger children. One of the children is younger than the other one. The oldest one is standing off to the right. Towards the center of the picture closest to the woman sitting the stool, there is a table that has which appears to be a bowl of some type of hot cereal, a rag and a bottle. Next to the table there is a black and white dog lying on the floor. As you look farther to the right, you can see a woman laying inward to a hole in the wall as she appears to be grieving over the pale shaded , wrinkled body whose head …show more content…

The family seems as though they struggle to survive and maybe they are housekeepers who reside within the cellar of their master residence. From the bowls shown on the table I assume that they are poorly nourished. I also wonder if they are mourning the death of their loved one who may have been the head of their household. From the figure lying within the opening in the wall that looks like an old cabinet He is very pale and lifeless. His lips are darker than the rest of his body and his mouth is slightly opened which lead me to think he was dead.
Similar to the painting “Diego In My Thoughts “ by Frida Kahlo, “ The last breathe “ By Josef Israel expresses a lot of deeper meaning. They both show pain, heartbreak and mourning.
