Mr. Hamrar’s decisions were motivated by the desire to preserve his sense of character and accomplishment. He had been ensuring that his wife had a good life, keeping their house and land in good shape, trying to make sure that she was always happy. But as he got older it became harder to do so. With age comes the loss of the ability to do the things that you used to be able to do with ease, and Mr. Hamrar had a hard time dealing with this loss of independence. He realized that he would never gain back that sense of freedom, and decided that that only way to control his life was to take it.
