In this unit we learned about eastern civilizations, the rise and fall of the Japanese empire, samurai, and their everyday life. The dynasties and culture of China, The brutal Arab spring, the Iran hostage crisis, and the modern middle east. Chinese civilization was the first learning outcome of this unit. Confucius was Chinese sage born in 551, BC , who believed that knowledge is power and that noble deeds not noble birth bestowed honor on a man. But he would never know that some of his ideas, like how the poor and the elderly should be fed by the state or to give knowledge to the common people, because he would die in 479 ,BC thinking he had failed. Bushido is a code of moral principles that is heavily focused on loyalty, reckless courage, generosity towards the weak, and honor till death. If a samurai is dishonored he would commit a suicide or Seppuku to regain his honor, this was displayed in Last Samurai when general Hasegawa committed Seppuku after his lost in the beginning of the film. A samurai would carry a long sword called a Katana and a short sword called a Wakizashi. They would be place on their belts to symbolize they were samurai, but like all good things they had to leave. The elimination of the samurai began after the fall of the Tokugawa Shogunate in 1867 and emperor Meiji took power. He had a desire to modernise Japan to compete with the western world, also known as the Meiji revolution. The samurai weren 't allowed to carry swords in public and lost their status. The last learning outcome was the modern middle east. The Israeli- Palestine conflict is a major part of the development of the middle east. It all started on May 14, 1948 when Israel declared itself a country ,but neighboring Arab countries refused to recognise it as a county. Eventually leading to a few wars that ultimately lead to Israel winning, but they are still in conflict over Jerusalem. When Hamas was elected to power in Gaza ,they coordinated rocket attacks against israel and were they would ultimately lose being invaded by Israel. A second part of the development of the middle east is Iran. Iran is a multicultural nation, that is primarily Shiite muslim. Which is more strict and traditional than Sunni. We supported the shaw at the time who tortured and put his people in famine. So when it got out that he had cancer and was receiving treatment in america the people revolted and evaded the american embassy taking 52 americans hostage, but six escaped and their escape from Iran is the plot of Argo. They demanded that we return the shaw in exchange for the 52 americans, but if we surrendered the shaw he would be hung in the street. It wasn 't until Reagan was elected did we get them. They spent a total of back a total of 444 days prisoner in Iran . Iran today is looking for nuclear power and is anti-israeli.
