The theme of identity is an important component which determines who the characters in a novel are, and what their motivations may be. The theme of can be found in the book “The Last Unicorn” by Peter S. Beagle. This fantasy story is about a Unicorn named Kelly who sets out to Hagsgate to defeat the Red Bull and release her kinsmen. Her journey consists of multiple obstacles including the changing of herself into a mortal. The Unicorn gains many friends and enemies, and even happens to find love. The ending may not have been the happiest as typical fairy tales, but many issues were resolved and the curse of Hagsgate had been lifted.
