Kate Foley Ms. Zisel Global 9H April 2nd, 2017 The Middle Ages was a time of destruction and redemption for the people of the Roman Empire between A.D. 500-1400. The best description of this time period can be represented by four terms, the Golden Age, the Dark Age, the Age of Faith and the Age of Feudalism. Each time caused for a significant change in society that had a tremendous impact. From the troubling times of invasions and destructions to a time of prosperity and progression, the best terms that describe the Middle Ages are the Dark Ages and the Golden Ages.
The Middle Ages was a dark time period. It was dark because education and culture were beginning to decline drastically. This is evident in document #1. As it states,”Europe suffered a decline in commerce and manufacturing, in education, in literature and the arts, and in almost all that makes possible a high civilization”. This detail demonstrates that the decline in education caused the civilizations to not reach their best potential and education began to become really rare to find as it was only accessible/available in Churches.
Those who were educated began to question the ways of the church. This was the beginning of something called “The Renaissance” Thing began to change. Things such as art, literature, and astronomy, all took place and changed the mans view of the world forever. During the Middle Ages, art was mainly focused on one thing.

The Medieval Ages were a time where many things like romance, art, music, poetry, disease and death all thrived. Everyone in this time period had a different point of view on it. Some thought it was a golden age, some thought it was an age of feudalism, and some also thought it was a dark age. Yes, this time may have had its ups, but it also had many, many downs. Its darkest times consisted of Barbarian invasions, death, and wars.
Many labels were used to characterize the Middle Ages, however the best were The Dark Ages, The Age of Feudalism, and The Age of Faith. The Dark Ages accurately identifies the Middle Ages because of all the death, destruction, and plague throughout. The Middle Ages followed the decline of the Roman Empire, which causes very harsh times across Europe. Also this time period consists of the plague which virtually slaughters one-third of Europe.
After the Middle Ages, Europe went through a rebirth of literature and classical learning. This time period was known as the Renaissance. Also during this time period, The Age of Exploration had begun. Europe was trying to discover new and faster ways of reaching India. In the process, they found the Americas, along with other routes to Africa and Asia.
The Middle Ages led to the Age of Exploration. The Middle Ages (500 CE-1500 CE) was a time in history after the Roman Empire collapsed (476 CE). The Age of Exploration was when people traveled off to foreign lands and explored or traded. The Middle Ages had a lot of important events that led to the Age of Exploration. Here are some examples the fall of the Roman Empire, Feudalism,The Crusades, the Black Death, the Commercial Revolution, the Renaissance, and the Vikings.
After the fall of the Roman Empire in 476 CE, it led into the Middle Ages. Commonly referred as the Dark Age, Europe was in a time of reformation. Many have used the “Dark Age” as a synonym for the Middle Ages, due to the lack of education and unethical actions that occurred during 500 CE to 1500 CE. The Middle Ages weren’t so dark as it seemed, it was a duration of reconstruction, acquired learning, agricultural boom, technology improvements and architecture.

The Labels of the Middle Ages From 500 AD to 1400, the Middle Ages in Europe have had three different ages. These ages are; the Age of Faith, the Dark Ages, and the Age of Feudalism. Europe used to be controlled by the roman Empire, but when the empire fell, the middle ages began which were full of change. They best describe the era because of invasion from barbarians, strong belief in religion, and a new economic and social system called feudalism.
In the History Channel's documentary "The Dark Ages", the Early Middle Ages is portrayed in many ways that aren't consistent with actual history. The History Channel portrays the Early Middle Ages as The Dark Ages. The Early Middle Ages was not the actual Dark Ages because, the real Dark Ages was in Greece in 1100-759 B.C.E. when Greece collapsed. However, History Channel's, "The Dark Ages" was supposed to be around 500-1000 C.E. History Channel makes The Early Middle Ages appear as a gloomy, dark, "hellish" time. The medieval times lasted from the 6th century to the 16th century. The medieval era wasn 't a pleasant time for people to be alive as it was a time were punishments and trials were really harsh and dangerous. During this time, it was easy for people to commit a crime. Crimes that are now seen as something insignificant were perceived as a horrible offence such as sleeping on the streets and talking behind peoples back. The society in the medieval times were organized by the feudal System.
This time period lasted from the 5th century to the 15th century, it began with the fall of the roman empire and merged into the renaissance and the age of discovery. It covered the time from the fall of the empire to the rise of the ottoman empire, which is the time of castles, and peasants. The middle ages were also called the dark ages because this period of time had been lost to history. Many important records of this period have not survived, historians don’t know much about this time as it is. During this “dark age” there was no “pizazz”.
