When asked about the most defining characteristic of Rome, the answer stood out to me right away. Roman power. While I do feel the government and laws are a strong characteristic of Rome, to me, you really cannot have those two items without a strong military. A weak government would be overthrown and unrealistic laws would be revolted against. Romes military was unmatched at the time. What is interesting about the Roman military was how it grew and kept growing. This leads me into my example of why I believe this. The Latin War of 340 - 338 BCE.
