After the American Revolution the American society had been fundamentally changed. The Revolution changed the American society in the political, social, and economic fields. After breaking away from what appeared to be a corrupt government in England, American leaders formed the concepts of their ideal society. The American Revolution succeeding in accomplished the securing of rights for the citizens of America, however by not creating a sound economic base, the Revolution failed by not ensuring that the new government would be strong enough to protect rights.
Furthermore, there is another similar dictatorship in North Korea in today’s world. The supreme leader of the country is named Kim Jong-un, and he controls everything that occurs. This is in close relation to El Jefe in Before We Were Free because they both have absolute power over the citizens. Just like in the novel, there are many people in the world that disagree with what Kim Jong-un is doing.

But it is just these few huge problems that bring the entire system crashing down. One major issues is the oppressive rules and limited rights on the people. People usually don’t get to speak off their mind, because loyalty to the government is very important in Communist societies, especially North Korea (howstuffworks.com). Kim Jong Un uses censorship on media. He controls the news, what people search up, etc. He lets people have no privacy and controls their lives. One example that proves this is Kim Jong-un has his police force go house-to-house to search for illegal DVDs, movies , shows , Etc that 's he does not want people to see or have. He does not want people to see the outside world.
North Korea is a mysterious place to outsiders but from the inside it may seem normal because the people have no sense of reality or awareness. In the novel 1984 a made up character named ‘Big Brother’ is much like Kim Jong-Un in our world. There are two parties outer and inner and the inner parties consist of people from the inside and the wealthier class unlike the outer witch holds the middle class. The outer party of 1984 worship Big Brother and most are forced to because they are being watched by spies and telescreens (surveillance systems). North Korea is very similar to 1984 due to the constant surveillance and the cult of personality.
Throughout the book Big Brother shows his power amongst all the people in the book, he does not show weakness or vulnerability, and does not tolerate being challenged. Big Brother controls time and memory because it controls people's perceptions of the present and the future in his favor in what he thinks is doing the right thing. In the book 1984, Big Brother's desire to control time and memory is a key part of their strategy to maintain power over the population. By controlling the past and manipulating people's perceptions of time, the government is able to control people's thoughts and emotions.

In North Korea everything is controlled by the government. There is no freedom of speech and if someone opposes Kim Il-Sung, they would be executed. Similarly in Animal Farm, any animal that spoke against Napoleon would be called a traitor and then the animal would be executed. In North Korea there were also given the illusion of freedom but they didn’t really have it because they could pick their own president even though there was only one person running. This is similar to Animal Farm because after Napoleon kicked Snowball out of the farm, he declared himself the leader of Animal Farm with no opposition.

In 1984, George Orwell writes about a dystopian society called Oceania with a totalitarian government. Winston, the main character, is an Outer Party member and works for the government who is under the rule of “Big Brother” and the Inner Party. The Party’s purpose is to rule Oceania with absolutism and have control over its citizens by using propaganda, censorship, and the brainwashing of children. Today, many modern-day countries use these techniques to maintain their power including: North Korea, Saudi Arabia, and Nazi Germany. First, North Korea and Oceania use propaganda to encourage patriotism to make themselves look better to citizens in order to keep a totalitarian rule.
So voting is just a show. The supreme leader of North Korea is also not elected by people. Kim Jong-un was born to be the supreme leader because his great-grandfather was the first leader who leaded North Korea became independent. North Korea is just same as a family business. People need to follow what the supreme leader says without judgement.
