30 January 2023 Character Analysis George Halas was a legendary American football coach, player and owner who was one of the co-founders of the National Football League (NFL). Born on February 2, 1895, in Chicago, Illinois, he was a crucial figure in the growth and development of the NFL and is widely considered one of the greatest coaches in the history of American football. In The Life and Legacy of George Halas written by Jeff Davis, the author states, “He was an innovator both on and off the field, and his influence can still be felt in professional football, even 21 years after his death”. (Davis 2004).

He was ahead of his time in his use of film to analyze opponents, and he was also known for his toughness, demanding the best from his players and pushing them to their limits. Halas was also a key figure in the growth and development of the NFL. He was involved in negotiations with players, helping to ensure that the league had financial stability. He was also a key figure in the creation of the NFL draft, which helped establish the league as a major American sports institution. He was a leader who was not afraid to speak out and stand up for what he believed in, and he helped establish the NFL as the dominant professional football league in the United States. Aside from his contributions to the NFL, Halas was also known for his love of the game and his fierce competitiveness. He was never satisfied with second place and was always striving to be the best. Patrick McCaskey talks about his famous quote in his article about the 10 NFL coaching principles. McCaskey states, “‘Never go to bed a loser.-- George Halas’. My grandfather succeeded in a fledgling professional football business through The Great Depression and World War II” (McCaskey 2012). This drive to win was evident in everything he did, from his coaching style to his ownership of the Bears, where he was known for being hands-on and involved in every aspect of the team.
