Our First Lady, Michelle Obama
Michelle Obama wouldn’t be who she is today without all of her outstanding accomplishments. “In 1991 she became an assistant to Chicago Mayor Richard M. Daley.”
(“Michelle Obama”). This shows that even before becoming the first lady in 2008, Michelle already had a political career. She learned a lot about politiics early, and this helped her be an outstanding first lady. “However, in 2018 she released the autobiography Becoming, which garnered much attention and became one of the top-selling memoirs in the history of publishing. During childhood Michelle learned the value of hard work. “Obama learned the value of hard work from the example of her parents. Her mother stayed home with the kids until they entered high school, then took a job as a secretary. Fraser Robinson had been diagnosed with multiple sclerosis, a disease that attacks the nerves, before he was even 30 years old. Nevertheless, he went to work every day, even if he had to get up earlier or use a walker to get there on time.” (“Michelle Obama”). This is a key thing that was engraved in Michelle’s head at a young age that has helped her get to where she is. She not only understands to be hard working, but witnessed this growing up. In addition, “Michelle Robinson … was the daughter of Marian, a homemaker, and Frasier Robinson, a worker in the city’s water-purification plant.” (“Michelle Obama”). Michelle didn’t grow up in the best neighborhood due to her family being less fortunate. “She spent time volunteering, putting together care packages for members of the military.” (“Michelle Obama”). Michelle put time in efforts to help make care packages for the military, and this is just one of the many things she’s done for the military community. Michelle also looked at and helped children in poverty by providing aid to them and issues their community faces. According to EBSCOhost “Much of Obama's job in the mayor's office involved helping develop programs for the community, especially lower-income residents like the people she grew up with. She contributed to programs intended to decrease infant mortality, provide afterschool activities for kids, and promote immunization through mobile health facilities.” In Michelle’s autobiography she wrote "That's what women have to focus on: what makes them happy and what makes them feel comfortable and beautiful. If I can have any impact, I want women to feel good about themselves and have fun with fashion." She has brought awareness to the women’s empowerment movement and stated that women need to be themselves, not let anyone tell them what or who they can
