The Lightning Thief by Rick Riordan follows Perseus Jackson, a somewhat troubled boy, who seems to have the worst luck! Not long into the book Percy discovers that he is a demigod; half god half mortal, and that this is the main cause of all his issues. With this new knowledge and Grover his satyr best friend , Percy treks to Camp Half Blood the only safe place for demigods like him. There he meets Annabeth Chase, daughter of Athena and it is revealed that he is a son of Poseidon, and the supposed Lightning Thief. Percy is accused of taking Zeus 's master bolt for his father and now has to prove his innocence by tracking down the bolt. After a cross country trip where they nearly lose their memories in an enchanted casino, are nearly stretched to death by a bed salesman, and petrified by Medusa they reach Hades. There it is revealed that Hades is not the thief but his Helm of Darkness was taken as well, the bolt magically appears in Percy 's bag and they realises that Ares was instigating the fight of the century. Percy 's tone and attitude is eveident almost immediatly with chapter titles like, "I Become Supreme Lord of the Bathroom," and "We Get Advice from a Poodle," he brings hilarious sarcasm and a bit of irony into his storytelling; he sets us up with a big declaration and then turns this declaration on its head catching us off guard. Percy is quick to downplay the severity of the matters at hand, instead opting to find the comedy and sarcasm underneath. It 's pretty clear that Percy is not a typical Greek hero in the way that he 's so laid back and nonchalant at times. He even tells us in the beginning of the story, "Look, I didn 't want to be a half-blood" . The life of a hero is not necessarily one that he 's excited about, and his storytelling reflects this . He 's a witty, and matter-of-fact storyteller, telling it like it is as he notices
