Once in our lives, we must embark on a journey to find ourselves. Though the destination may be the essential goal, the real reward is finding the hero within during the journey. Disney’s The Lion King begins with the birth of a lion cub named Simba. After a tragic accident, which kills his father, Mufasa, Simba is forced to run away from his home and his uncle, Scar, takes over Pride Rock. On his journey, Simba meets a meerkat and a warthog, Timon and Pumbaa. He begins to enjoy his new life, until his old friend, Nala, returns to convince Simba to return home. Simba is inherently marked as a hero because he was born into the royal family and named the future king. As Simba grows older he becomes a mischievous cub, which causes him to be involved in a dangerous encounter with a group of hyenas in an elephant graveyard. Later, Mufasa tells Simba that one day he will be gone and Simba will have to take his place as the new king which represents Simba’s call to adventure. Simba realizes that as he grows older he will have many different and important responsibilities as the future king. Later on an accident occurs when Simba gets stuck in a wildebeest stampede and Mufasa must save him. Scar pushes Mufasa off the cliff and into the stampede, where he is trampled to death. The refusal of the call is shown when Simba departs from the Pride Lands. She came to find Simba to convince him to return to the Pride Lands. Simba is content with his new life and refuses to go back with Nala. Simba knows he must take his place as the new king but the temptations of his perfect life hold him back. He asks for his father’s advice but is instead confronted by the mischievous baboon, Rafiki who acts as his supernatural aid. Rafiki tries to convince Simba to return home back to his pride. Simba realizes he cannot give into the temptations of his perfect life and agrees to returns back to Pride Rock with Nala along with Timon and Pumbaa which represents the crossing of the return to the threshold. When Simba arrives a fight commences with the lionesses against the hyenas and Simba faces his uncle, Scar. Simba discovers the truth about his father’s death and Scar is ultimately killed by the hyenas because of his deceitful lies. As Simba overlooks at the head of Pride Rock, the rain ceases and the clouds part to shine down on Simba. At the end, we witness Simba’s new beginning with Nala and his newly born cub. Conclusion Throughout Simba’s journey, we watch him be marked at birth, face trials and tribulations, and return home to take his place as king. Simba’s forced to sacrifice many things, like his perfect life with Timon and Pumbaa, but at the end of his journey he owns up to his responsibilities. As Simba transitions through his hero's
