C.S. Lewis and The Lion, The Witch, and The Wardrobe
Clive Staples Lewis was born on November 29, 1898 in Belfast, Northern Ireland to his father, Albert James Lewis, and his mother, Flora Augusta Hamilton Lewis. Lewis had an older brother named Warren Hamilton Lewis, which he had been born on June 6, 1895. As a child, Lewis had a dog named “Jacksie” whom he really loved and cared for. When he was just four years old, the dog got ran over by one of the first cars in Ireland and died. Immediately following his dog’s death, Lewis changed his name to Jacksie. She was separated from her alcoholic and abusive husband, novelist William L. Gresham, and came to England with her two sons, David and Douglas. Lewis at first regarded her as an agreeable intellectual companion and personal friend, and it was on this level that he agreed to enter into a civil marriage contract with her so that she could continue to live in the UK. The civil marriage took place at the register office, 42 St Giles', Oxford, on 23 April 1956. After complaining of a painful hip, she was diagnosed with terminal bone cancer, and the relationship developed to the point that they sought a Christian marriage. Since she was divorced, this was not straightforward in the Church of England at the time, but a friend, the Rev. Peter Bide, performed the ceremony at her bed in the Churchill Hospital on 21 March 1957. Gresham's cancer soon went into remission, and the couple lived together as a family with Warren Lewis until 1960, when recurrence of the cancer caused her death. While he was working, the kids would play hide and seek and explore around the home. This gave C.S. Lewis ideas while he was writing the book. Although Lewis was just now getting more ideas, he had been coming up with imaginary characters throughout his whole childhood. Since Lewis had become a Christian again before writing the book, he decided to add a Christ-like character and also a Satan-like character in the story. The Christ-like characters name is Aslan, he is a lion and also the ruler of Narnia. He shows respect, guides others and does whatever you picture what Jesus does. As for the Satan-like character in the novel, that would be the White Witch. She is a very cruel, mean, and a disrespectful person. Throughout the novel, she lures the children and tries to kill Aslan. Her plan doesn’t seem to fall through when she dies after being attacked by
