The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion the Witch and the Wardrobe takes place in a World War II era England. Four siblings, Peter, Edmund, Susan, and Lucy, are sent into the countryside to be looked after by an old professor in order to get away from the bombings. This professor lives in a mansion, in which one of the rooms contains an old wardrobe. This is understandable considering they are treated like slaves in a way when they are forced to leave their homes, more or less, to get away from the World War II bombings in England. They get paper slips pinned to them with their information and are led on to a crowded train amongst many other children. Before departing, Edmund is told by his mother to listen to his older brother, and Lucy is expected to do the same. Furthermore, when Mr. Tumnus starts crying, Lucy gives him her handkerchief and tells him to keep it, expressing sympathy. Sympathy is another characteristic of slave mortality. In addition to Lucy first expressing slave mortality, her brother also has predominant characteristics in the beginning of the film. When Edmund first discovers Narnia, the first person he meets is the White Witch. Right away he is attacked by her troll making him feel lesser. One of his first sentences to her is “yes please your majesty” reacting to her master mortality. Edmund sees the white which as good rather than evil because she is nice to him at first and tells him she can make him prince of Narnia. This is very appealing to him because of how he is treated at home; often bullied by his siblings. A slave mortality weighs things on good or
