In the song, “Part of Your World,” from the Disney animated feature film, The Little Mermaid, Ariel expresses her strong desire to become a human. “What would I give If I could live out of these waters? What would I pay to spend a day warm on the sand?” she sings. She wishes for legs to walk and dance, but that is something she cannot have. Her yearning only grows stronger and ultimately causes problems for her. The Little Mermaid focuses on Ariel’s search to find her version of true happiness just as The Necklace focuses on Mme Loisel’s quest to find hers. Ariel yearns to be a human so she is able to walk and dance. Mme Loisel wishes for an extravagant life filled with fine jewelry and fancy parties. Both go to great extents to get what they want albeit to end up more unhappy than they were before. Ariel is so tired of being a mermaid living under the sea that she loses sight of just how special she really is. She is so fascinated with life on land that it causes to overlook all of the wonderful things right in front of her. Like Ariel, Mme Loisel doesn’t realize the blessings in her life. She has a husband who tries to make her happy, yet she refuses to see it, instead searching for happiness in other places. Both Ariel and Mme Loisel wish for a better life, and ultimately realize that the grass isn't always greener on the other side. In conclusion, Mme Loisel is a close replica of Ariel, especially when comparing their appetite for the great unknown. As Ariel serenades us in “Part of Your World,” that, too, could be Mme Loisel’s narrative song. They both day dream about their idea of happiness, all the while missing the gifts they already have.
