Psychological Drama Psychological drama is a subgenre of a psychological thriller. The genre, psychological thriller first originated in 1927, in the film, The Lodger by Alfred Hitchcock. A film that is about a serial killer that goes by the alias “The Avenger” who is on the loose and is known for killing blonde women. The film was first screened in the public in London thus making this genre of drama first appear in London. One of the founders of psychological drama/thriller had to be Alfred Hitchcock due to many of the films that he contributed for this genre. Films such as The Lodger (1927), Foreign Correspondent (1940), and Dial M for Murder (1953) were many of the films that this genre had to offer. The story starts, builds its way up to the climax, and the drops with the resolution however, it does include many more plot twists than an average play. The content that is included in this genre contains a lot of suspense and of course, thrills. This genre fiddles with the sentiments of the characters minds. The psychological thriller genre not only includes drama but can also include action, mystery, or horror. Examples of playwrights in this genre are Jennifer Wynne Webber (noted for her play, Whistling at the Northern Lights) or Hannah Moscovitch (noted for her play, Little One and Other Plays). There aren’t many playwrights for psychological thrillers since most of them are seen in films. Their weren’t any political influences in psychological thrillers/drama. The reason why is because psychological films can touch on many serious/depressing topics like a tragedy. For example, Obsessed by Steve Shill or One Hour Photo by Mark Romanek are examples of Psychological thrillers that are depressing. Psychological thrillers/Psychological drama use the style of representational drama. They don’t break the 4th wall by including the audience and are more realistic. However, in our opinion, it is possible to have a presentational psychological thriller/drama. Most psychological thrillers/drama take in place in creepy and dark places. Places such as haunted houses or abandoned prisons are examples of this. As for visual elements, many psychological thrillers/drama would use dark tones to set the ambiance From the first psychological thriller to now, there were a few changes. To start, psychological thrillers are now in colour and aren’t silent. Not to mention, with the technology today, CGI (computer generated images) are now included in these films.
