I am reading Hero by Mike Lupica and I am on page 124. The book is about Zach, whose father died in a deadly plane crash. Zach is looking to find out what he thinks happened to his father: The plane crash was not an accident. While still coping with the loss of his father, and while looking for what happened to his father, Zach meets a man, Mr. Herbert, who gives Zach superpowers. In this journal I will be predicting and questioning.
Harris, Stephen L. Author of Harlem 's Hell Fighters: The African-American 369th Infantry in World War I states in his book that the Harlem Hell Fighters were “Led by mostly inexperienced white and black officers, they not only received little instruction at their training camp in South Carolina but were frequent victims of racial harassment, from both civilians and their white comrades”. The Hell Fighters did not let anything such as racial harassment stop being from seeing the bigger picture. They wanted to show their worth as human beings. In stories, we often learn a lot about a character by how they deal with conflict. Conflicts are what instigate character development, and the novels Fahrenheit 451 and Learning to Read and Write are great examples of this. Ray Bradbury's Fahrenheit 451 tells the story of Guy Montag, a "fireman" who lives in a society where burning books is the norm. Frederick Douglass' Learning to Read and Write is the autobiographical story of a slave secretly trying to learn to read and write. Bradbury and Douglass both use the conflicts Person vs. Person, Person vs. Self, and Person vs. Society to develop their characters over the course of their respective texts.

Wilson also uses characters stories to incorporate the oral tradition of storytelling, as it was how the slaves had lived and recorded history prior to their emancipation, and was still a very big part of how they lived day to day life. An example of this would be Bynum’s story about the shining man. Bynum tells the audience (and Martha) about the shining man and the significance of how seeing the shining man made him decide he wanted to be a binding man. This is a significant part of Bynum’s life, for without this moment, Bynum could have ended up just like Herald Loomis—desperate and despaired, looking for someone or something to fulfill his life’s purpose. Bynum’s story about the burning man also shows the different styles of life back then, and the different cultures that moved from the South to the North, all in search of better life and better opportunity.
In the “Lone Ranger and Tonto Fistfight in Heaven” Sherman Alexie explores an anxiety that is often shared by minority groups trying to navigate through society. In the personal narrative Alexie is able to convey the struggle to find one's sense of belonging in a place where your existence is a second thought at best. This story also touches on the fear of how trapping “home” can feel when someone striving for more. To best illustrate these concepts Alexie uses mostly metaphor, historical context, and humor..
The movie "The Lone Ranger" is an American western action film that tells the story of a two men subduing local villainy and bringing justice to the American Old West. The story centers on the recollections of a Comanche Native American Tonto and the adventures that found lawman John Reid transform into the Lone Ranger, a legendary hero of the Old West. Tonto and John both have a common enemy, Butch Cavendish, an outlaw who killed their families and tribes. The construction of the Transcontinental Railroad played an important role in this movie. A railroad tycoon, Latham Cole, wanted to take complete control over the railroad company and used mined silver to gain power.
For example, dealing with religion in the novel they believe in some sort of god “she would begin praying frantically, “Oh Mary! Oh, Mary! Queen mother of mercy!” ( page.26) because she’s putting her dreams and inner thoughts into a higher power. The book has no main character because it deals with many different stories but each story can have their own main character such as plots, climax and resolution.
For instance describing them in one of the paragraphs Steinbeck writes, “Mack has qualities of genius. They’re all very clever if they want something. ”(Page 201) When describing and giving an idea of the type of character Lee Chong is state’s “is successful in Cannery Row because he does not fight his environment, but adjust his business to fit it.” (Page 201-202) This section is able to break down each of the main characters just so you can maybe get a visual in your head to better understand them.

Static character is a short story character that does not develop or stay the same into conclusion of a plot; they are there to help drive the story. Most of Carter’s stories are not new tales, but retellings of old ones, and underline the fact that stories are a part of the human civilization and have always been there. However, in the general acceptance of stories as part of culture what has been overlooked is the fact that the stories shape culture and human behaviour. Stories encode moral norms and gender stereotypes and propagate them in society. Fairy-tales, in particular, portray stereotypical modes of behaviour for men and women, boys and girls and subtly urge them to internalize and thus perform this kind of stereotypical behaviour. Through her stories Carter draws attention to the passive acceptance of the social and moral codes by the readers and the need for all individuals to think anew and re-examine those blind spots in the tales and uncover what has been covered up.
