Ralph is furious at Jack for letting the fire out, scared that this was their only time to be rescued. I also think that it represents survival as fire ends up being how they get rescued and fire stays prominent throughout the novel. The way they are rescued ends up not actually being through the signal fire but because of them trying to kill Ralph and smoking
As the fire continues, it soon becomes out of control. The mulberry child even gets lost in the fire, implying that he gets killed from the flames. None of the boys want to admit that they let this happen, because they do not want to confess that they let their society get out of hand. As we can see already, the fire is losing the hope it once had. The society that Ralph is trying to create is already losing order, and some individuals are starting to go with their instincts instead of reason.

Ralph proposes that they build a fire at the top of mountain on the island so that if ships were to pass by they would see the fire and potentially rescue them. Although they fail at keeping the fire going at first, Jack and his hunters nominate themselves to make sure the fire keeps going. As they attempt to reignite the fire, it results in trees nearby being set ablaze. Golding describes the fire in a way of giving it animal-like movements: “the fire laid hold on the forest and began to gnaw.”(44) In this quotation he foreshadows that eventually power and fear will start to eat away at the civilization the boys have created with each other and in their own minds.

People go through life in different ways, each having their own set of morals and beliefs. Nonetheless, the bond between humans and their moral system can be compromised under stressful and life-threatening circumstances. According to Abraham Maslow’s hierarchy of needs, humans cannot reach their fullest potential without fulfilling their elementary needs for survival. When situations come and strip them of that, it begins to tear the system a person has; leaving them to desperately leave everything behind for the sake of survival. Night and Lord of the Flies explore the limits of humans under extreme conditions.
There is a group of boys whose whole contribution is to keep the fire going as piggy states “The fire is the most important thing. Without the fire, we can’t be rescued” (Golding). For the boys the fire symbolizes the desire to be back in the world they remember giving them hope to survive. Golding's use of symbolism helps the reader to connect with the fire as a sort of hero for the boys protecting them, more importantly protecting their minds from reflecting and worrying more about the beast. In order for Golding's presentation of the boy's primal instinct to come across to the reader as the savergary that lives within all humans, how due to the standards of the world no mind should reach that point of corruption.

In 1897, under the guidance of of president’s Willian McKinley, the United States had the victory over the Spanish and American war in 1898. During this time, the American empire invaded Puerto Rico, Guam, Hawaii and the Philippines and became a big American Imperialism in U.S history. The United States decided to make Puerto Rico and Guam became an insular area under the sovereignty of the United States, organized territory but not incorporated in the United States. Hawaii became a parts of the U.S and last Philippines had rules under by the U.S for many years before gave them the right to self-government.
Throughout the beginning of the novel, Ralph is the leader of the fight to keep and maintain the fire, but he is starting to give up hope and lets the fire die. Lastly, fire symbolizes hope during the end of the novel. Jack and most of the other boys have turned on Ralph and want to “hunt” him. They decided that the best way to get Ralph to come to them on the beach was to light the whole forest on fire so Ralph would be forced out to the beach. Ralph was trying to run out of the forest as “the roar of the forest rose to thunder and a tall bush directly in his path burst into a great fan-shaped fan.
The fire was also a symbol of civilization, that the boys would survive and get rescued. Fire is quite profound in what it reveals about humans. The fire was the object that the hunters didn’t have, it was desirable because it was limited. The fire brought out the innate greed that humans possess. The hunters weren’t content with asking for fire from Ralph, they were too prideful and savage to be civil in any manner, so they stole it.
Golding says “The boys broke into shrill, exciting cheering” (41) in the beginning of the novel, then at the end of the novel says, “A great clamor rose among the savages” (164). William Golding who wrote The Lord of the Flies changes his word choice from “boys” to “savages” to emphasize the fact that the boys change into savage creatures. Three symbols represent civilization and change into chaos over the course of the novel. The three symbols representing change are Piggy’s glasses, The fire, and the conch. These figures demonstrate the important theme that the calm civilization will soon break out into disorder.
Lord of the Flies Analysis Lord of the Flies, written 1954 by British Author William Golding, is a tale of a group of young boys who find themselves stranded after their plane crash lands on a deserted island. The boys, who at first, attempt to set up a society, complete with a form of government, soon fall apart when their primitive urges kick in. The novel was both a commentary on man’s violent nature and of how pointless war is. Also, each character in the novel was representative of a larger concept, thus this allegory had many layers.
