Astonished by his findings, the naval officer stood quietly as the boys finally got control of themselves. Curious as he was, the officer found it best to refrain from too many questions after just witnessing the boy's obvious unstable states. All of the boys scrambled onto the cruiser while most of their heads hung down as if they were too heavy to lift. Ralph imagined his life before the island, telling himself he should be relieved that they were rescued, but he could not help but worry about the new life ahead of him. Ralph observed each of the boys surrounding him, wondering if they were nervous to go home like him. Ralph believed that talking to Jack might help to cope with some of their feelings, however, he could not get up the courage to speak to Jack, just like Jack could not get up the courage to speak to Ralph. Jack, being the one who led the savages on the island, was afraid to confront Ralph because he was afraid to confront the part of himself which arose on the island. As the man speaking continued with his prayers, the faint sound of footsteps caught Ralph’s attention. Turning his head a little to the left, Ralph saw Jack approaching through the corner of eye creating a small smirk on Ralph’s face. The memorial was everything Ralph hoped it would be, even though he never got the opportunity to talk to Jack at the end of it.
“Ralph? … How are you? And the other boys? …,” said a man in a uniform and white-topped cap. It did not take Ralph long to realize that the man talking to him was the same naval officer who rescued him only about a month
