In The Lord of the Flies, the boys destroy their chance of having a peaceful Utopia by their lack of togetherness and organization. Since Jack and Ralph are the two having the feud that start the downfall of the island, it’s their fault. If Jack and Ralph could get along, at least for the sake of others, then their civilization could be a lot better. Using Zimbardo’s theories to illustrate the destruction the boys have caused, the theories outline how no one would die or be hurt and they all could be rescued sooner if they work together. Therefore, the catastrophe of the island’s civilization is their doing. The boy’s civilization decline because they fail to focus on getting home. They stop caring about each other. The chaos on the island began when Ralph shows weakness and asks Jack, “Why do you hate me?”(Golding 118). The boys show that when given a little freedom and lack of government, society will destroy itself. That is an example of one of Zimbardo’s theories, diffusion of personal responsibility. The boys diffuse themselves from normal responsibilities of civilization. When the boys torture Samneric for not telling them where Ralph is, it demonstrates Zimbardo’s dehumanization of others. As well as when Piggy dies and Jack takes that time to appoint himself as leader. This describes Zimbardo’s passive tolerance of evil through inaction or indifference. On the island, the beginning to their chaos is the leadership, mostly Jack’s leadership. If Ralph hadn’t been so unsure on what to do, then maybe Jack would not have taken over and became so power hungry. Jack is power hungry enough to kill anyone who is in his way. Zimbardo’s theories, when compared to Lord of the Flies, shows how evil and inhuman the boys became it also shows how barbaric people can become when not in the realms of an organized
