Although the short story "The Lottery,” written by Shirley Jackson, and the movie adaptation have somewhat of a solid storyline, the movie presents much more. The short story The Lottery opens with the author, Shirley Jackson, describing the setting. She does this by using words such as "clear” and "sunny." The short story emphasizes the date and the morning of June 27. In contrast, the movie starts with a man who is later revealed to be the protagonist, Jason Smith. Not only that, but it is hinted that Jason was having a nightmare that involved his mother and the cursed day, June 27.
