The author Shirley Jackson made a short story called The Lottery and it was published in 1948 in the magazine “The New Yorker”. The lottery is a town tradition where all the towns people get together. In this little village here is only a population of 300 and the whole lottery only takes 2 hours. They have a black box that they use to put all the papers in, then the head of the households come up and draw when their name is called. Everyone keeps their paper folded till all have drawn then they open their paper and raise it in the air. Then whoever has the paper with the black dot has their family draw and one of the pieces of paper has the black dot. Whoever gets the black dot is the sacrifice for they year and is stoned. They don’t really know why the do this but they can’t change tradition. Throught the short story the theme of it is power of tradition. Mr. Adams suggests that they should quit the lottery but he is put down by old man Warner who has participated in it for 77 years. Some of the other villages have quit the lottery but the village of 300 will not quit it. They believe that sacrificing a person will help the crops grow but it’s really the weather that does that. First, the ritual of both story and movie were the same. They both used the black box, and Mr Summers and Mr. Graves were the operators. Next, The dialogue of both were similar. In the movie and short story Mr. Werner said, “lottery in June corn be heavy soon”. A lot of what the townspeople said were the same also, Like Mr Adams, he said “ you know some of the other villages have quit the lottery maybe we should. Lastly, before the stoning Tessie protested the same and suggested that Don and Eva should have to draw too. But Bill said “ you know that wife's draw with their husband's family”.In conclusion, there were many similarities between short story and the
