The short story The Lottery by Shirley Jackson was published in 1948 by The New Yorker Magazine. This is a fictional story that does not have a time period. There is a village with around 300 people that get together to to start a Lottery. On a bright warm sunny day, the grass was richly green and flowers were blooming. It was the morning of June 27th. The Lottery was to take place in town square, which was surrounded by the post office and bank. Mr. Graves and Mr. Summers were in charge of setting up The Lottery. A couple people in the village were talking about how some towns had already given up the Lottery. But Mr. Warner thinks that they are a big pack of fools. To begin with, people gave little Davy weapons to kill his mom. In the movie someone gave him a rock. In the story someone gave him a few pebbles. In both they expected Dave to participate to kill his mother. This matters because it makes the story and movie feel more cruel, more gruesome, to have his mother participate in his mother's death. Second, in both the story and the movie Mrs. Dunbar did not want to participate in the stoning. In both she told her friend to go kill without her, that she couldn't run as fast as she could, that she would have to catch up with her later. This lets me know that Mrs. Dunbar was a very nice, kind hearted person. She didn’t want to kill Tessie. This makes tells us that Mrs. Dunbar is very nice. Lastly, Tessie wanted Eva and Don to take their chance. Both in the story and movie she wanted Don or Eva to die instead of her. That shows that Tessie was very selfish and wanted her OWN child to die before her. This matters because, that makes us mad at Tessie for wanting her child to die.
