Would you rather die for a sacrifice, or fight to the death to instill fear? “The Lottery” is a poem about a town who annually gives sacrifice to make sure that their crops grow. “The Hunger Games” is a movie about a girl named Katniss who has to join her “friend” and 22 other kids to fight to the death to please the ruler of Panem, President Snow, and to help him instill fear in the citizens. Tradition and violence as entertainment are two themes “The Lottery” and “The Hunger Games” have in common while also having contrasting ideas and events of their own. In the poem, when Mrs.Hutchinson is pick, she knew someone from her family had to be picked, so the poem says, “‘There’s Don and Eva!’ Mrs.Hutchinson yelled ‘Make them take their chance!’” This shows that Mrs.Hutchinson wanted her own children to die instead of her. In “The Hunger Games”, there is one boy and one girl picked from from each district to participate in the games. In “The Lottery”, everyone in the town wants to participate, but in “The Hunger Games” only districts 1 and 2 wanted to participate, the other districts hated it. This makes that act of the lottery seem less horrid because people are not being forced into it. In “The Hunger Games”, the only tributes that are okay with killing people are the tributes from districts 1 and 2. Another difference is that Cinna and Katniss showed signs of opposition in “The Hunger Games”. IN “The Lottery”, no on in the town tried to stop the lottery or even question it. This gives Katniss and Cinna the credit for starting the rebellion by themselves, giving the districts hope. In “The Lottery” no one was brave enough to say anything, so they have to continue to do the lottery forever. The lottery is done because the people of the town believe that if they do not do it, then they’re crops will not crow, starving them, so they have to do it, but in the Hunger Games are just done to make sure that the districts are fearful of the Capital and will never rebel. The town in “The Lottery” have a reason to continue this cruel and ruthless act, but the Capital in “The Hunger Games” is just horrible and want to control Panem.
