In the short story “The Lottery” by Shirley Jackson, the characters in the story have various opinions and feelings about, their traditional ceremony, “The Lottery”. Old Man Warner is a seventy-seven year old man who, has been in the lottery for seventy-seven years. He voices his opinions very loudly, when he hears that other towns have discarded the traditional lottery. He speaks aggressively saying, “Crazy pack of fools” and “Listening to the young folk, nothing is good for them”. The reason he would want the lottery is because, it is said to bring good harvest, and it has been a tradition in their town for a long period of time.
