Alfred Prufrock by T.S Elliot is one of the most famous and important poems of 20th Century. This poem shows many aspects of modernist poetry and the ideologies of the 20th century also the style of T.S. Eliot. This essay will analyze The Love Song of J. Alfred Pruffrock according to modernist poetry, the era it is written, the style of T.S. Eliot and the ideas explained in Tradition and the Individual Talent? The modernist poetry style has started at the 19th century and it is continued in the 20th century. This style is mostly affected by the World War I and the rapid changes – like industrialization and the politic issues – happened in the world. The literary style changed according to those extreme changes and adopted a marginal way of writing. Poets tried to be exclusive and they all refused the earlier methods thinking as they are all outdated. This ideology made the writers to push themselves to be unique in the history. As the authors have changed their style the features of the poetry also have changed and here some of the features of modernist poetry listed: 1. Juxtaposition of ideas 2. Intertextuality 3. Use of allusions and multiple associations of words 4. Borrowings from other cultures 5. Unconventional use of metaphors 6. Massive use of alliteration and assonance 7. No regular rhyming scheme 8. Visual images in distinct lines
