Multiple animals follow a pattern, commonly referred to as cycles. In this case, various types of animals follow what is known as the lunar cycle. According to Zimecki (2006), “[a]nimal studies revealed that the lunar cycle may affect hormonal changes early in phylogenesis (insects). In fish the lunar clock influences reproduction and involves the hypothalamus-pituitary-gonadal axis. In birds, the daily variations in melatonin and corticosterone disappear during full-moon days.” Pursuant to Zimecki’s study, this particular cycle distinctly impacts insects and fish in procreation while it also has an impact on birds sleeping patterns, similarly to humans.
