The Vietnam War started on November 1, 1955. After the World War 2. And it ended in 1975. The Vietnam War, it is also called second Indochina War. It started after cold war times. It took place in North Vietnam and the South Vietnam, Laos, Cambodia. The war fought between the North Vietnam and the South Vietnam. North Vietnam was supported by one of the biggest communist countries in the world such as; China, Soviet Union. Also North Korea, Cuba, Bulgaria, East Germany, Romania, Sweden. And the South Vietnam was with anti-communist countries such as the United States of America, Thailand, Philiphines, South Korea, Australia, New Zealand and other smaller anti communist countries. It was a French colony for years. Not only todays Vietnam. back then French controlled Indochina, which is now Vietnam, Laos, Cambodia. But during the World War 2 Japan was in that territory. After Japan had lost the World War 2. They decided to leave the country in 1945. Then France wanted to take the control of the Indochina territory again. In 1949 China became a communist country so it effected other countries closer to that area. (Which United States said it is a domino theory) Communist influence started to get stronger in Vietnam. Ho chi Minh (a nationalist leader) effected the people in Vietnam wanted to make them free. Because Vietnam was still a French colony. Ho chi Minh declared Vietnam as an independent country so there was a war began between the French and the supporters of ho chi Minh. He had so many followers and people believed him and wanted to be free. French lost the war in Vietnam so they decided to leave the country. After French left Vietnam the country split into 2. In the end of 1960's the United States president was Lyndon Johnson. He started taking the soldiers back. The United States started to withdraw from the war. He started to make peace speeches everywhere. In the 1968 election, republican Richard Nixon claimed that he has a plan to end the war in Vietnam. But actually it took even longer for him to end the war. It took five years for the United States soldiers to leave the Vietnam. He said the Vietnam war is coming to a conclusion with his plan. He gave a speech about Vietnamization in a conference. He defined Vietnamization as withdrawing the united states troops and giving all the responsibility and direction of the war to the government of South Vietnam. So basically leaving South Vietnam alone. But there was another thing he didn't tell people. He started to train the South Vietnam army more so they could be built up be better and take the responsibility in the war against north Vietnam. As the United States made South Vietnams army more stronger and capable president made the us troops leave the country. In April 1970 he actually made a lot more us soldiers and south Vietnamese soldiers to attack in Cambodia and Laos. President Nixon basically expanded the war instead of trying to end it
