The main conflict in Lord of the Flies is man vs man. More specifically, Ralph vs Jack. Beginning with the introduction of both boys, the author conveys a clash between the two. Jack is extremely hot-headed, conceited, and believes he deserves things he really does not. He is careless, craves power and dominance. Ralph, however, is calmer and has a natural leader in him. He wants to make responsible choices for the well-being of himself and everyone else on the island. This is what causes Ralph to be voted for chief instead of Jack.
