The theme in the short story, “The Marble Champ,” by Gary Soto was that hard work pays off in the end. I know this because, Lupe found a sport that she would love and be good at, so she worked very hard to achieve her goals. She worked/practiced day in and day out. And in the end, all of her hard work payed off. Have you ever felt like you had to give up at one point in time. Well, Lupe never did. A lot of people should want to be like her.
Lupe was a very hard worker, and all of her hard work payed of in the end. One reason I know this is because, in the beginning of the story was a very large overachiever in school. For example, she won the school spelling bee, and always had all A’s. School was always Lupe’s main priority, but she always had the idea of sports in the back of her head. Also, Lupe was very patient with herself and never gave up on herself. For instance, Lupe could not hula hoop or beat anyone in the fifty-yard dash, but she still never gave up. Have you ever had so much patience, because that is hard to do. Especially when people tried to bring her down, she didn't listen. It is hard to believe in herself even after so many mean people coming at her. Lupe is a very strong leader. This shows all of the hard work and patients Lupe has all to lead up to success.

This story relates to the quote by Robert Griffin, “Hard work beats talent any day, but if you’re talented and work hard, it’s hard to beat.” This quote relates to the story because, when Lupe was talented, and coached herself, practiced harder than anyone I know, and was kind to her rivals, she won the championship without bragging.
