What are the keys to survival in a world that seems almost certain to end your existence one day? Characters in The Marrow Thieves certainly know what they are. The setting is in a future world where the ability to dream has vanished, so indigenous people are hunted for their bone marrow, as it holds the capability to dream. The main characters conflict for survival against the recruiters, the antagonists in the novel. The novel teaches me multiple essential lessons for survival, including leadership, a sense of community, and bravery. Because they apply to everyday life, I can live a more fulfilling life by implementing the lessons from The Marrow Thieves.

In the novel, the family must be dauntless to fight for their survival and freedom. The family resists the recruiters by fighting when their backs are against the wall. For example, when they are ambushed by indigenous double agents working for the recruiters, they are valiant and fight back. Also, when RiRi gets captured by the indigenous double agents, Miig bravely and steadily says, “Just put her down. Please, just put the girl on the ground so she can breathe'' (131). Near the epilogue, Miig is overwhelmed with grief and loses intrigue in being the leader. Therefore, Frenchie has to be valiant and become the leader.
