The Mask You Live In is a documentary that highlights the upbringing of men and ideas around the concept of masculinity. The documentary reveals the harsh realities of what young men have to live up to and the pressures they face. The director of this film used many rhetorical strategies to reach the audience. The usage of allegory through the life stories of men that we interviewed, logos in the statistics on manhood, ethos within the clips that are presented throughout the film, and the conflict of men being raised take on this role of toxic masculinity at such a young age. Story with masculinity is an allegory of the effects of toxic masculinity in the realm of young men. The topic of men's and boys' mental health is vastly overlooked. Masculinity is not only extremely targeted to boys by older men, but the rest of the world also pushes upon it. The film uses logos to present to the audience the facts and statistics of young men in America that are not talked about in the media and that are unknown to many people. Statistics show that “Less than 50% of boys seek help for mental health”, “Suicide is a third leading cause of death for boys”, “Every day three boys commit suicide”, “Only 30% of boys that are bullied tell adults”, “The average boy tries drugs at 13 years old”, “1 in 4 boys binge drink” and so many more.” These statistics may seem surprising and terrifying to many viewers, but this is the reality of the young men in these new generations.
