This essay will be answering the question “Is Lennie capable of building mature relationships with other characters in the Book Of Mice and Men by George Steinbeck?” The book Of Mice and Men By John Steinbeck is set during the Great Depression in the United States. The main characters are George and Lennie who are complete opposites. Of Mice and Men has two main characters George and Lennie who are completely opposite in all ways. Of Mice and Men talks about many different themes including Depression, Loneliness and Racism.
Lennie and George's friendship is based stewardship, understanding, and sharing a common dream. A type of relationship that George and Lennie have is based on stewardship or taking care of someone. On the night before they go to the ranch to work, George and Lennie, sit by a pool of water and talk. George says, “I want you to stay with me, Lennie. Jesus Christ, somebody'd shoot you for a coyote if you was by yourself” (Steinbeck 13).
Steinbeck says that with companionship, people act more loving. One of Steinbeck's greatest books Of Mice and Men focuses on companionship. Steinbeck shows how companionship remains in our lives. The theme of the book portrays on how spending life alone affects you. But it also shows the benefits of it.
What makes a good friend? According to World Book Online, friendship is a social relationship in which people help each other in times of need. This definition of friendship is evident in Of Mice and Men by John Steinbeck. The novella takes place during the Great Depression, a time when seeing two guys travelling around together like George and Lennie is rare. George and Lennie’s friendship is strong because they care for each other, George’s leadership over Lennie, and they work through tough times to remain content in the end.
In the novel of “Of Mice and Men” power and friendship is the very bases of the story. There are many people with power in the book but I specifically was interested in Curley’s power. Curley is the son of the Ranch’s boss and he is very spoiled. He does not listen to rules and usually gets away with any trouble he makes or gets into.
Nowadays, you can make friends very easily, but would we do the same in the Depression Era? John Steinbeck’s Of Mice And Men takes place in said era. The novel is set during the 1930’s in rural California. It chronicles the fictional story of George Milton and Lennie Small, two workers on a ranch in Soledad, California. The men are basically opposites, with George being small and harsh, and Lennie being big and sweet.
The relationship between the characters George and Lennie is a strong example of friendship in this novel. George and Lennie had been friends since they were kids; Lennie has always relied on George to get him out of tough situations since he is mentally challenged. When George and Lennie had arrived at the ranch the boss was wondering why Lennie couldn’t speak for himself; and that is when George had to step in, “George said, ‘He’s my … cousin. I told his old lady I’d take care of him.
The theme of friendship in the novel, Of Mice and Men is “friendship is necessary for human survival.” The theme is explored within the adventures of Georgia and Lennie. So, I think that the theme is true for both George and Lennie. In the novel on page 15, Lennie says,” But not us! An’ why?
In ‘Of Mice and Men’, written by John Steinbeck, friendship is portrayed as one of the main themes in this novella and a very important part of people’s lives. Steinbeck also portrays friendship by highlighting the importance of friendship and showing how its presence and absence can trigger many positive and negative emotions. Its presence creates hope, feeling of companionship and a sense of responsibility. In spite of friendship’s presence creating positive feelings, its absence does the complete opposite. It generates a feeling of loneliness and isolation.
In John Steinbeck´s Of Mice and Men, the ideas of companionship and friendship are addressed greatly. George and Lennie are companions who have traveled alongside each other for a long time. They have to keep moving because Lennie causes trouble, and essentially strains their relationship. Although they have issues, they have a deep connection which benefits each of them. Steinbeck´s Of Mice and Men uses motifs and characterization to show that companionship is beneficial to individuals.

Loneliness is a strong word, however it means a lot to be lonely. The definition of lonely or loneliness is sadness because one has no friends or company. In the novel Of Mice and Men John Steinbeck shows that Crooks, Candy, and Curley’s Wife have loneliness because they never have company or friends to talk to. These Character’s show that loneliness is a problem that must be overcome in order to live a happy, fulfilled life.
A true friendship is something that everyone wants to have but not everyone can have it. in the novella Of Mice and Men the author shows the true meaning of friendship and these 2 best friends Lennie and George shows that they have Friendship and they love each other,care for each other and always have their backs i give some really great evidence and try to show you the relationship these guys had. Through the book George one of the two main characters he shows how he cares and takes care of his good friend the other important character Lennie,who was a mental disability but he still loves him but he does show some tough love. In the book George has been shown numerous times that he takes care of Lennie but the first quote It 's because Lennie was in trouble he was about to die,but his friend does something really beautiful “Couldn 't we just lock him up the poor bastards nuts{steinbeck 87}”In this quote he 's trying to convince the guys who were about to kill him by saying he didn 't know what he was doing,This quote means that he really cares for his friend and he 's trying to save him.
