“He had given me the power of one-one idea, one heart, one mind, one plan, one determination.” (103) Peekay uses this quote with the recurring title, “The Power of One”.This is the first time he mentions the power of one however and it is just after he reads the letter from Hoppie Groenewald, a man who works on the train that Peekay rides for the first time; Hoppie is also a welterweight boxer and the reason Peekay begins boxing altogether. Peekay has influential people in his life at different times, but almost everyone of these characters seem to die. So, peekay is left alone, one. I believe Peekay uses a quote that includes the power of one because he has since lost a friend and must stand alone and continue to pursue his dream of being …show more content…
One of his biggest ideas is that there is no wholly original piece of literature. In the chapter, “Hanseldee and Greteldum”, Foster explains how characters in novels tend to have similar personalities as characters in other novels, especially in fairy tales or nursery rhymes. For example in, “The Power of One”, Peekay has two maid like people who live with his family named Dee and Dum. We all immediately think of the classic, “Alice in wonderland” with Tweedledee and Tweedledum. Therefore throughout the rest of. “The Power of One” We ;link these to characters to being as goofy or different as the characters in, “Alice in Wonderland”. “Is that a symbol?” is another chapter in Fosters. This chapter is especially useful in decoding, “The Power of One”. Foster argues that everything is a symbol and has a deeper meaning if you can find it. Peekay is a misfit from the beginning. He is a rooinek in a school of all Boers, he gets teased and is an obvious outsider. All of Peekay 's friends are also all misfits. Doc is a german, Geel Piet is a yellow man, Morrie and Miss Bornstein are Jews, and Rasputin is Russian. All of his friends share one common trait, they all don 't belong. It 's a symbol that everyone is just as different as Peekay and can come together. Peekay has a dream while working as a grizzly in the mines about a fuse that turned into a black mamba, the same serpent that Peekay saw when he was looking for Doc in the crystal cave after Doc 's death. The next night Peekay almost dies from lighting a fuse that is just like his dream. He could have died with the black mamba just as
