Homer’s The Odyssey, translated by Robert Fitzgerald, contains a man named Odysseus whose story can relate to soldiers in today’s military, and how Odysseus has to persevere to get home. Odysseus is a loving husband who goes to fight in the Trojan War. His son, Telemachus, is born shortly before Odysseus has to leave for the war. The Trojan War is a long fight that lasts ten years.
The Odyssey Many people deem Odysseus to be an archetype hero. But was he really? Sure, he won many wars, but did he show the characteristics that matter? No!
While Andrei Konchalosvsky attempts to stay true to Homer’s The Odyssey, he extracts certain scenes which minimizes Odysseus’ incisive and prideful comportment. After Odysseus and his men impale the cyclops’s eye, the film simply shows them quickly sneaking out once the boulder is out of the way. However, in the epic poem, the audience is proffered evidence on Odysseus’ cunningness by describing how he devised a plan to use the sheep to escape the cave.
People's view of things will always differ. From Ancient Greece to 20th century America, writers' opinions of Odysseus in The Odyssey have varied vastly. In Homer's The Odyssey, Odysseus is portrayed as the most heroic person in the book, yet in Dorothy Parker's poem "Penelope", which shares Penelope's perspective of Odysseus' journey, Parker approaches Penelope's exasperation with only Odysseus being entitled "brave". The attitude towards Odysseus in Homer's The Odyssey and Parker's "Penelope" is very different, and this is shown through the epithets and adverbs the poets use to describe Odysseus and his actions.
As he watches the sheep file out, Odysseus realizes that the Cyclops’s ram were the only ones to go past the Cyclops. They were very fat with heavy, dark fleece. Thus Odysseus and his men escape by hanging underneath the ram. Odysseus ties three ram to each man, and chooses the woolliest, finest ram for himself. Safely back on the ship, it would seem all their problems are behind them, but Odysseus creates a new, even greater problem when he begins to taunt the Cyclops due to his ego and arrogance.
As they keep going forward they come across the home of one of the cyclops named Polyphemus. Polyphemus asks why he and his men are here and how many more there are. Odysseus makes a smart move just in case of an emergency and says “Our ship was broken up on the rocks, I replied, thinking quickly. “We are the only survivors.” He says this just in case something goes wrong the cyclops would think that Odyyseus has nowhere
Odysseus can be brave and caring, but can also be angry and selfish. To begin with one of Odysseus’s heroic qualities is that he can be caring towards Penelope: his wife and his crew. As Homer writes, “ I drove them, all three waiting to the ships, tied them down under their rowing benches, and called the rest: ‘ All hands aboard; come clear the bench no one taste the Lotus, or you lose your hope of home. ”(Homer,1046-1047).
The ancient greek story The Odyssey, written by Homer, shows how well the authors incorporated their beliefs and ways of life into their writing. A main belief that is emphasized in the book is Hubris, or excessive pride in oneself. The main character, Odysseus, is a human embodiment of this quality. Many of the choices he makes across not only what is covered in The Odyssey, but also his previous endeavours, are based on this. Although some are rather rash and lead to his possible demise, others show his brave side and his true qualities of being a hero.
Odysseus has many trials throughout his adventure. The Homeric usual hero is what he is set up as but unlike most of them he redefines himself. Homer’s creation of Odysseus as a dynamic character through the stories within stories and conflict explores the importance of the evolution of characters despite his apparent hero status within Greek culture Odysseus displays a strong hubris in the first parts of the Odyssey which would fit his reputation as the famous war hero he is. This turns to become a burden on him, he is determined and cares for his men yet his selfish and arrogant behavior cost him those men.
The Odyssey by Homer revolves around the character, Odysseus, and his ten-year struggle to return home after the Trojan War. As the epic’s idol, he displays the combination of a clever, handsome, and courageous man popular among the mortals as well as the gods. Essentially, he embodies the ideals of the ancient Greek culture, being adorned with many favored characteristics of the era. However, an intriguing aspect of Odysseus lies in his personality. As the protagonist, he does not manifest the entirety of a stereotypical hero because Odysseus has a fatal flaw—his arrogance.
What is a hero? Being a hero consists of doing what others are not willing to do. Being heroic is helping others out, doing dangerous things, or even being wise. During Odysseus' travels, he proves that he is a hero who is willing to do anything to return home. In this essay I will be explaining the reasons why Odysseus acts heroically during his time at Troy and on his adventures home.
The decision as to whether it would be morally acceptable for the operation to take place, lies in the social construct of the surgeon and what influences her morals. Throughout the course of this essay I will identify theories on morality that will offer a framework as to how we think and identify which moral theories have a significant influence on the social construct of the surgeon which consequently will reveal her decision. Utilitarianism; right and wrong is determined by an outcome whereby happiness outweighs the consequences of the moral dilemma, in this case killing one man to save five. This is one of the theories the surgeon would potentially base her decision on. If the surgeon believed in this theory, her decisions would not be influenced by any personal preferences or interests, she would in turn believe it morally admissible to operate, as sacrificing the life of one person to save five people would be for the greater good, as the action may lead to overall happiness which in-turn outweighs the bad.

In the section “In the One-Eyed Giant’s Cave” from Homer’s The Odyssey, Odysseus is portrayed as a hero through his character traits and behaviors. When Odysseus and his men attack the city of Ismarus, the Cicones’ strong hold, Odysseus made sure to fairly distribute the spoils among his men. Odysseus’s behavior shows that he is a great leader, a characteristic of a hero. While Odysseus and his crew are in the Cyclops’ cave, Polyphemus, the cyclops, notices them. Polyphemus asks who they are with a monstrous tone, “‘Strangers!'
Summary: Cyclops In the story, Odysseus is still speaking to the Phaeacians, but is now telling them of his encounter with Polyphemus, the cyclops. Strong winds blew Odysseus and his men to Polyphemus’ island, where they unloaded and entered a cave that Polyphemus happened to live in. When he entered the cave, he closed the entrance with a large boulder that only he could move, trapping himself, his sheep, and Odysseus inside. After he ate some of Odysseus’ men, Odysseus devised a plan to get the cyclops to move the boulder so that the men could escape.
