Ethan Frome takes place in Starkfield, Massachusetts, in the late 1890s to the early 1900s. One of the three main characters Zenobia, better known as Zeena, is Ethan Frome’s wife. Zeena and Ethan came to be a couple when Ethan’s mother became sick and Zenobia came to assist her. After Ethan’s mother passed, Ethan felt lonely and did not want Zeena to leave. Ethan fell in love with Zeena and later married her, although she was seven years older than him.

A burden, by definition, is a heavy load that is often difficult to carry. War, both for a country and an individual, is one of the headiest burdens to be shouldered with. War forces change in men both physically, emotionally, and mentally. In the short story “The Things They Carried” by Tim O’Brien the tough weight the infantrymen must carry is both physical and emotional.
Usually siblings argue and blame each other for frolicsome things, not their mother’s death. In Miracle’s Boys by Jacqueline Woodson Lafayette, Charlie, and Ty’ree are orphans. Charlie is indignant at the world because Lafayette was there when his Mama died and Ty’ree was there when his Daddy died. This novel is about three orphaned boys struggling to keep things together.
In the novel Ethan Frome, surroundings influence the protagonist, Ethan, in simple daily decisions and larger life decisions. Ethan’s surroundings go beyond just the setting; they also extend to the culture and people around him. The town of Starkfield, societal norms, and the characters of Zeena and Mattie influence Ethan’s life, majorly impacting the decisions he makes and his morality. Starkfield, Ethan’s home town, is a desolate place plagued by harsh winters. The town is described as covered in a blanket of snow and always bitterly cold.
The upbringing of a child contains many factors, many of which correlate to where a child grows up. The people, culture, and experiences of someone’s childhood are the greatest determining factor for what kind of person they will become. So how does the nature and nurture of one’s upbringing impact the decisions that they make, and their life in general? Author Wes Moore explores this question in his memoir, The Other Wes Moore, as it relates to two lives in particular. Moore main purpose in this book is to explore the overarching impact that a collection of expectations and decisions, not always one’s own, can have on someone’s life.
Company Overview I have selected the Thomas Keller Restaurant Group as the company that I will be using in the opening of a new restaurant. The company is a private corporation owned and operated by Chef Thomas Keller (Company overview of Thomas Keller restaurant group). I chose this company because the Owner/Chef is a world class Chef who owns multiple 3 Michelin star restaurants, The French Laundry in Napa County and Pre Se in New York, New York (Le chef américain thomas keller reçoit la légion d’honneur, 2011). Author C.S Lewis once stated that “Hardships often prepare ordinary people for an extraordinary destiny,” seemingly explaining that those who experience adversity prosper in difficult situations. It is what we experience for the worst that changes us for the better. Roman poet Horace asserts this claim, saying that adversity plays into an individual’s character. He claims that talent arises from adversity and becomes prosperous in normally dormant situations. I believe this claim to be true as it can be seen in numerous historical events and works of literature alike.
The Intolerance Backlash In the last century, the epidemic of racial discrimination in America is showcased by how society functioned in areas like the South. Their entire social structure once revolved around segregation of not just race, but gender as well. In the book To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee, the normalcy and expectation of racial prejudice is demonstrated in 1930’s deep south. In the movie The Help, directed by Tate Taylor, the ever growing civil rights movement of the 1960’s began to change the view of some southern citizens. The main characters, Scout Finch and Skeeter Phelan, both witness the bigotry and injustice within their society.
June 27, 1880 in Tuscumbia Alabama, a healthy baby girl, with the name Helen Adams Keller, was born into the world. But at nine-teen months Helen had been suffering with an unknown illness, that left her both blind and deaf. After that all the way till Helen was six she was a very angry child because she wanted to find a way to express her other feelings, yet didn’t know how. She kicked, screamed, and became a very wild and an unruly child. Until a couple months after turning six, Helen’s father and mother connected with Alexander Graham Bell, who contacted Ann sullivan.
The story “Real Work” by Rick Braggs, told of a man who had learned some hard lessons early on in his life. He described that it might be hard, hot and you might get dirty, but it was worth it. The author showed us with his comparison and contrast of his childhood experiences working with his uncle, that he experienced things at the time, that possibly made little sense. The examples of some of the work he did, was really tough. The fraternity he mentioned made me picture someone who had to push their body to extremes for their paycheck.
I grew up in a small Texan suburb called Keller. I have lived in this area since I was in the fifth grade and, even though I now attend college in Dallas, I still come back to visit often. My family has recently relocated our residence closer to the Fort Worth area, but Keller remains a five-minute drive away and I still consider myself a Keller resident. Growing up, I thought Keller was a small town with nothing to do. The closest movie theater was a 25-minute drive to Southlake, Texas, and there were not many restaurants or other recreational areas.
Hellen Keller overcame her disabilities to become a great author and a lead example to all people with disabilities to show that nothing is impossible. Having no way to communicate or see my surroundings is impossible to imagine and is a great obstacle to overcome especially more than 100 years ago. I would imagine that my life would be completely different with two major disabilities such as Hellen Keller and would be very difficult without a great teacher like Anne Sullivan. I would feel trapped if I were to lose my ability to use language later in life and would not know what to do. I would not be able to talk, see, read or write and that leaves me with no form of communication.
Helen Keller was an extremely courageous woman. She did some great things in this world while trying to overcome many challenges and turned out to be an amazing inspiration to many people. Her lifetime was filled with many exciting things from the beginning to the end. Helen Keller was born on June 27, 1880 in Tuscumbia, Alabama.
