A Good Man Is Hard To Find “A good man is hard to find.” That title is just what it says. In this story there are a lot of events that ended terribly. The family in this story decides to go on a simple vacation in the summer. Everything starts off as planned and is going swell, but things slowly end in disaster. The grandmother is a crucial character in this story. She is involved in causing the accident and getting the family going down the wrong road. What is a misfit? Well a misfit is someone that really doesn’t fit or fits badly. I’m sure the reader expects the escaping prisoner to be the misfit, but in my opinion the grandmother is. The grandmother didn’t want to go to Florida like her son Bailey suggested, but wanted to go to east Tennessee where some of her old connections were located. She tries her best to change his mind by reading a particular story in the newspaper which read, “Here this fellow that calls himself The Misfit is aloose from the Federal Pen and headed toward Florida.” She insinuates that she wouldn’t dare take her children anywhere close to Florida. She claims that the children have been to Florida before, but not Tennessee. However the wife tries not to hear anything she is saying. Since she doesn’t want to go, Bailey’s son John Wesley suggests she should stay home. From there on Baileys daughter June Star said that wasn’t going to happen. The next morning the grandmother was the first one in the car and the trip began proceeding to Florida. So on “Outside of Toombsboro she woke up and recalled an old plantation that she had visited in this neighborhood once when she was a young a young lady. She said the house had six white columns across the front and that there was an avenue of oaks leading up to it and two little wooden trellis arbors on either side in front where you sat down with your suitor after a stroll in the garden. “Hey!” John Wesley said. “Let’s go see it! After the wreck, the grandmother came to a conclusion that she would not mention the plantation was in Tennessee. Weakly, the children’s mother suggested that a car might pass through. Shortly after, they saw a car slowly approaching. The grandmother promptly stood up and beckoned the car toward them. As it came closer, they began to make out what the vehicle looked like. The story described it as a “big black battered hearse like automobile.” Inside the vehicle were three men. Two of the men emerged from the vehicle and stood on the left and right side of the family. They neither spoke nor said a word. The driver then got out of the car. The grandmother then realized that the third man was someone she recognized, but could not place who he was. In fact, the third mans was the escaped convict known as The Misfit. Pretending to care, The Misfit mentions the family has had quite an accident. The grandmother stated, “We turned over twice.” The Misfit corrected her by saying, “Once.” John Wesley then pointed out the men had guns and asked, “Whatcha gonna do with that gun?” Then all at once, the grandmother cried out the man was “The Misfit!” This made him happy. However, this was the worst thing that she could have done. Eventually, the men started to kill the family. The grandmother was saved until last. When she touched The Misfit on the shoulder he
