Dark Morals “The Tell-Tale Heart” by Edgar Allen Poe and “The Monkey’s Paw” by W.W. Jacobs are horror stories by American authors. “The Tell-Tale Heart” is a story about a psychotic narrator that killed an old man because of his eye. After killing the old man, the narrator heard sounds that led him insane. “The Monkey’s Paw” is about a family who received a magical monkey’s paw that could grant wishes. However, granting wishes led to dark consequences such as death. The two stories use literary devices to describe the plot vividly and keep the reader engaged. In “The Tell-Tale Heart” the insane narrator killed an old man because his eye had given him an eerie feeling. His action sets the mood as suspenseful and somber. The mood is suspenseful because of events before the death of the old man builds up an anxious feeling. This makes the story anxious and engages the reader. It's the beating of his hideous heart,” (Poe 94). In the story, the narrator murdered the old man with a strange eye. A neighbor had reported a shriek to the police who came to investigate the situation. When the officers were first investigating, the narrator acted normally until later on the guilt of killing the old man had taken over him. The guilt made the narrator hear the old man’s heart beating which led the narrator to confess to his action.
