Selkie Play Analysis

The Monologue I chose to do on the play “Selkie” involves the mother, Margaret, the mother of Ellen Jean. The Setting is in a small town but the monologue takes place on the beach at night. Also it takes place around a hundred years ago like it said….though I don’t exactly remember where I read it. Margaret is also a “Selkie” creature but had her pelt taken away from her so she couldn’t go back home, which is in the sea! Her daughter, Ellen is also a selkie but is the 1st selkie to actually be land and water! Margaret also cares for others and tries her best to care for them and make sure what happens to them is right. Kinda like when Ellen’s father tried to cut the webs off Ellen’s hands but Margaret stopped her husband from doing it but Ellen …show more content…

Though after her mother leaves..Ellen follows shortly after promising Tam a dance when she comes back which she does. Now for some of the characters. Ellen’s father like I said is “serious-like” from what I saw and doesn’t like Ellen going on the beach or at least near the water. Now Pa...he takes care of Ellen..it seems like that...making sure she is okay and trying to keep her happy. Margaret also takes care of Ellen...she is also the wife of Ellen’s father if you didn’t know already. She seemed caring and sweet kinda like I am unless you get annoying which is a lot of people but I’m able to keep quiet. Then we have Tam..who was known to not be nice or trusting but he earns Ellen’s trust by saving her. They may or may not like each other….well it kinda seemed like it, mostly how Tam gave her a kiss when she kinda protected him and cared for him, when she thought he might have died...but he was faking. Also if you wanted to know how Margaret lost her pelt and wasn’t able to go home I will now tell you. Well you know the father right? Well he kinda “Kidnapped” her or at least took her from the other selkies one night...which is when he also stole her pelt so she could not …show more content…

Like Pa , Mother, and Tam...they all care about her and accept her the way she is even though she may be a selkie and have webbed hands! Kinda like even though I may be weird which is fun! I’m also quiet as you can maybe tell but these friends still like to talk to me...which I can actually talk to them without being shy. So I relate a little bit to the play and mostly the characters Ellen and Margaret which is Ellen’s mother! Also when Ellen promised she would come back for a dance with Tam….he almost thought she wasn’t coming since she was taking so long but she did. Though she said she was enjoying her time down in the ocean meeting new people {selkies} and her mother’s friends and family. It feels like she now is finally happy about actually being accepted for what she is...even though her family on land accepted her except maybe her father who wanted her to actually look “normal” which is quite weird to me...there is no such thing as “normal” we all have our differences...also normal is
