The Monroe doctrine was written in 1823 as an annual message to congress. The doctrine stated many things and was the major backbone for American foreign policy for almost a century. The Monroe doctrine had three main talking points. For one it stated that the United states would oppose any European powers that that tried to colonize any of the Americas as their own. Secondly the doctrine stated that the United states would leave European affairs to the Europeans and stay out of any wars or political banter between them.
