The Monroe Doctrine
The Monroe Doctrine influence upon American history has had a profound affect. It is the foundation of American foreign policy that spans across centuries.
“The Monroe Doctrine simply articulated what Americans had believed since the beginnings of their foreign policy—that there were two worlds, old and new, contrasted and separate” (Farmer, Degler, De Santis, p. 233). The two world concept is as prevalent today as it was when it was first instituted. Although I know that this ideology was instituted concerning territories, it actually bridges into the decisions of everyday life. Each generation wants to forget the old and pursue newness. When I think of this concept old and new my mind goes to the writings of Paul, when he wrote to the Ephesians and said, “You were taught, with regard to your former way of life, to put off your old self, which is being corrupted by its deceitful desires; to be made new in the attitude of your minds; and to put on the new self, created to be like God in true righteousness and holiness.” (Ephesians 4:22-24 NIV). The Monroe Doctrine was a warning to European countries to keep out of Americas north and south and not to interfere or try to establish colonies in the region. It was isolationism in that it told the world that we the United States were drawing a line in the sand and telling old Europe that their colonialist mentality would no longer be accepted. Less it be viewed as an act of war or requiring intervention in retaliation by the USA.
