The main characters in this novel are Conor who has the lead role in this book, the monster who comes to Conor every night at 12:07, Conor’s mum who has cancer and plays a significant part in Conor’s sorrow, Connor’s grandma who Conor has to live with since his mom is in the hospital. Conor’s dad who has remarried and now lives in America.

A Monster Calls is a novel that shows Conor’s sorrow and pain through his mom 's cancer diagnosis. In this book Conor O 'Malley, the main character is encountered by a monster “A tree” who comes and visits him almost every night. This monster is what gives the story depth and meaning because it makes you question yourself to who the monster is and why he has come walking. During the story each night when the monster visits Conor he tells him a story, there were four stories in total, the last one being Conor’s story. The language used in this book can be summed up as being “colloquial language” since it is very informal a simple to understand.
