The novel The Call of the Wild is a story based on a dog named Buck who is a four year old part Shepherd and part Saint Bernard that lives in Santa Clara Valley, California. Buck is taken from his home to be a sled dog for delivering Alaskan mail. He goes through many transforming and unrealistic experiences that take him from being a dog to being a wolf. Buck meets many other humans and dogs and wolves in this story that all play a part in Buck’s transformation. It is overall a naturalistic tale about the survival of the fittest in nature and reality. Throughout the novel, Buck proves to be fit and capable of being a leader and a primitive, wild beast who find the true call of the wild. So in this essay, I will talk about the moods of the story. The three moods I will be talking about are tenderness, anger, and unpredictability. The first mood, tenderness, roughly shows up in this story. You may not be able to sense this mood, but at times, it is there. Examples could be when Buck made his first friend Curly. Though, this example could also go with the mood of anger. Unpredictability can be felt even when you do not know you are feeling it. It can be sensed when you are reading the book and you read the part of where Hal is about to beat Buck to death but Thornton saves him. Another example is when the Indians kidnapped Thornton. There is also the whole question on if Buck is going to go back to his owner, or if he is going to answer this strange urge or call of the wild. Or when Buck is kidnapped and taken away, you do not know what is going to happen next. If Buck is going to survive or where is he being taken to and why do they want him in particular. There are several questions on what is going to happen next on many parts and segments of this
