In the 1900’s the Nazis killed about six million innocent Jews. Anne Frank and her family spent roughly 2 years in a secret annex hiding from the Nazis. As time passed, many historical events that occurred outside the annex influenced the moods and relationships of the characters. One event that occurred outside of the annex is people being put in concentration camps. Her best friend was captured. She found this out when Mr. Dussel came in to live with them and he told her about Jopie. “She turns away, in tears. Mrs. Frank motions to Margot to comfort her. Margot goes to Anne, putting her arms comfortingly around her.”(Paragraph 322, Act 1, Scene 3) This shows that this changed the mood of Anne because of what happened outside the annex. Anne’s mood changes from being calm to being excited about Mr. Dussel moving in to being sad and worried about her best friend Jopie. Van Daan steals food. When Mr. Van Daan steals food from the safe he angers many people in the annex especially Mrs. Frank. “We’re all of us hungry! I see the children getting thinner and thinner. Your own son Peter … I’ve heard him moan in his sleep, he’s so hungry. And you come in the night and steal food that should go to them … to the children!” (Paragraph 22, Act 2, Scene 3) This clearly shows that Mr. Van Daan’s action ruined his trust with Mrs. Frank.
