War of attrition means breaking down the enemy by resisting over and over and eventually making them give in. One example of war of attrition in the book is when the soldiers dynamo for the soldiers base gets wrecked over and over again by people in the town. Lieutenant Tonder describes his frustration when he says ““I hate these damn lanterns major, when are we going to get the dynamo fixed” (Page 62) this act of resistance was successful because the soldiers were forced to use so much energy on such a small tasks that it tired them out and subjected them to further attacks. Another time in the book that the people use war of attrition is when the citizens of the town start planting small bombs around the soldiers supplies and work areas. The Invaders were completely paralyzed by these attacks because the bombs were too small to see. We see how this affected the Invaders when Colonel Lanser admits “They can drop as many as they want and we can't stop it and I can't hold it against them” (pg. 92) Even though the bombs could not do so much damage individually when they were set off in mass amounts they proved to be very successful.
