In the story General Zaroff, in multiple occasions has the upper hand and could kill Rainsford, it keeps him alive because he believes that he could just hunt him again later. That plan fails and Rainsford with his instincts outsmarts Zaroff and kills the hunter when he least expects it. General Zaroff gets himself killed by prolonging his hunt for Rainsford when he could have killed him on multiple occasions. “The hunter shook his several times, he straightened up and took from his case one of his black cigarettes; its pungent, incelen like smoke floated up to Rainsfords nostrils.

One aspect of Zaroff's appearance is that he appears to be a very handsome man. That conveys a sense of class and kindness that makes him appear as a gentleman. in the text we see that when it describes that, “Rainsford's first impression was that the man was singularly handsome.” The second aspect of General Zaroff’s appearance that helps us understand his character is that he has bold, authoritative features similar to the ones of someone in the military.

Throughout “The Dangerous Game” Rainsford and General Zaroff both show examples of IRony and exert arrogance.
